Born in Ontario, Paul is a man passionate about every aspect of horses from breeding and performance to show and trail riding. His first contact with horses was at the age of 8 when his family moved to the country and he started helping out at local farms that owned horses. The first riding experience he had was jumping bareback onto a grazing mare who, immediately ran to the river and sat down where Paul floated away. From that point on Paul was hooked on horses. The passion continued throughout the teenage years where he would work part time so that he could rent horses on the weekends for riding.
In 1970, Paul lived on an acreage, and while working full time, he apprenticed at a paint show barn in Ontario. From this education he went on to train and show horses. This contributed to his winning his first Canadian National Championship in Paint horses in 1974. The horse was a 2 year paint stallion “Mr. Skipperwill” that Paul raised, trained and showed and placed across the United States and Eastern Canada.
In 1978, Paul and Mr. Skipperwill moved west to Alberta where he became active in ranch work and rodeos. He joined SAARCA (Southern Alberta Amateur Rodeo Cowboy Association) in 1979 and spent 4 years as a amateur wild horse racer. Most of the ranch work involved gathering and moving cattle to and from summer pastures in the foothills of Kananaskis Country.
Throughout Paul’s adult life he has always been involved in every aspect of the horse industry including, breeding, raising, training, buying and selling horses but the focus of his passions came to light with the start of the Mitchell Centre for Equine Rescue and Education in 1999. The Mitchell Centre was established to rescue young, usable, sound horses from slaughter and place them into the hands of responsible horse owners. In its 10 years of operation, The Mitchell Centre rescued and placed over 1500 horses.
Until the closure of the Mitchell Centre in 2009 Paul had been involved with 100’s of radio interviews, television segments, he became a noted writer (published articles) and authority on all aspects of horse behavior, management and training. He has been called upon as an expert witness in several court cases involving horse behavior issues. Paul had been a guest speaker at many riding clubs and equine clinics.
On April 21, 2007 he received from AEF (Alberta Equestrian Federation) The Certificate of Merit in recognition of his dedication and commitment to the horse industry of Alberta.
Paul received from American Quarter Horse Association the Certificate of Recognition for 10 years (1998-2008) of Breeding American Quarter Horses.
